Research Interest

I am a river catchment scientist with a profound passion for understanding the intricate dynamics of rivers and how they respond to human impacts. My research journey began with a focus on headwater streams and smaller catchments, and has since expanded to encompass larger rivers, particularly the River Niger.

My primary mission is to decipher the complex interplay between natural processes and the resulting geomorphic formations. I achieve this by integrating field-based measurements, Earth observation data, and cutting-edge machine learning algorithms. I also explore the significant influence of extreme events such as floods, droughts, and human activities on the hydro-geomorphology of river basins and the consequences for river ecosystems.

Beyond examining river dynamics and extreme events, I aim to understand the combined pressures of anthropogenic activities and a changing climate on rivers and their surrounding catchments. To support this work, I use a comprehensive set of tools including field measurements, historical data analysis, modelling approaches, statistical methods, and geospatial techniques.

Ultimately, my goal is to support the health of rivers and ensure they continue to provide essential ecosystem services.

As an educator, I am committed to building foundational knowledge of fluvial systems and empowering students with problem-driven research skills. I encourage innovative solutions to catchment-wide challenges across diverse landscapes, using current and emerging techniques. My aim is to help shape the next generation of environmental scientists, equipping them to address both existing and future environmental issues in pursuit of a sustainable planet.
